What it is
Five cards for family trouble. It starts somewhere the other relationship spreads don’t: a position asking how long this has been here.
Family problems rarely began this month. Usually a position assigned in childhood is still running in adulthood. Look only at what happened this week and no answer appears.
Your role
Position 3 is the most uncomfortable and the most useful. It shows the role you keep taking inside this system.
Families assign roles: the mediator, the one who absorbs, the one who blows up, the one who stays away. Almost nobody chose theirs — it was handed out early.
But a role can be changed. You can’t change them; you can change your position, and the shape of the whole thing shifts when you do. That’s why this position exists.
What they are protecting
Position 4 is not about sympathising. It shows what the other person is actually defending.
Family conflict is usually two people protecting different things — face, freedom, or simply quiet. Once you know which, you can talk around it instead of straight into it.
It doesn’t have to be untied
Position 5 is deliberately not “the solution”. It’s where it could loosen.
Old family knots mostly don’t come fully undone. Trying exhausts you, and exhaustion pushes people toward cutting contact. A little slack is usually enough to live with.
⚠ If there is violence or abuse involved, don’t use this spread. That needs help, not cards. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233; in the UK, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is 0808 2000 247.
