Themed readings fix the spread and name each position in advance, so the layout matches what you actually want to look at. The 78 cards are the same; what changes is the angle you read them from. Pick whichever subject is currently occupying your head.

Why naming the positions helps

Tarot is rarely hard because the cards are hard. It is hard because the question is vague. Most people stall at the same moment โ€” cards on the table, and no idea what to do with them.

Named positions remove that. The Five of Cups in a โ€œwhat they are not sayingโ€ position reads as unspoken resentment; the same card in a โ€œmoneyโ€ position reads as being stuck on a loss that has already happened. The position asks the question on your behalf. That is why a themed spread is far easier to read than a freeform one when you are starting out.

Choosing one

Go by whatever thought keeps returning. If it is about a person, the unspoken-feelings, early-stage, reconciliation and compatibility spreads fit. If it is work, try the interview or career-change spreads. If you genuinely cannot tell, draw a single daily card first and see which area it touches โ€” that usually settles it.

Drawing once and sitting with the result beats drawing repeatedly on the same subject. Changing the cards does not change the situation.

When a card stops you

Every cardโ€™s upright and reversed meaning is written up in full in the 78-card dictionary. On the result screen, the card name links straight through to its entry.

If you want to learn spreads themselves, the three-card spread guide and reading court cards are good next steps. Once you have a feel for how positions work, you can build your own.

Common questions

Why do the spreads use different numbers of cards?

Because subjects need different amounts of information. A yes-or-no question only needs direction, so one card is enough. Anything about a relationship or a sequence of events needs three. More cards is not more accurate.

Can I do several in one day?

Yes. What is not worth doing is rephrasing the same worry across several spreads until one gives you the answer you wanted โ€” that is redrawing by another name.

Can I save a result?

Copy the share link from the result screen and it will reopen the same reading later. The cards are encoded in the link itself rather than stored on a server, which is also why no personal data is kept.
