What this spread does
Three cards in a row, read as past, present and future. It is the first layout most people learn, and the one experienced readers keep coming back to.
The reason is simple: three is about as much as a person can hold as a single story. One card gives you too little. Past five, beginners tend to lose the thread. Three naturally produces a sentence โ this is how it started, this is where it stands, this is where it goes.
When to use it
Use it when your question is already narrow. โShould I take the new job?โ or โis this relationship going anywhere?โ are well served by three cards.
If you are in a vague fog โ โwhy is nothing working latelyโ โ three will not be enough. Reach for the horseshoe or the Celtic Cross instead.
How to read it
Do not read the cards separately. This matters more than anything else here. Interpreting each card on its own gets you โthe past was fine, the present is bad, the future is unclearโ โ which tells you nothing.
Instead, start with card 2, the present, because that is your reference point. Then look at card 1 and build an actual sentence about how you got from there to here. Finally add card 3: given that current, where does it wash up?
If the three refuse to form one sentence, your question was probably too broad. Narrow it and draw again.
You can reassign the positions
Past, present and future is the common default, not a rule. The same three cards work just as well as:
Situation ยท Action ยท Result โ when you need to decide what to do. You ยท Them ยท Between you โ when you are looking at a relationship. Stop ยท Continue ยท Start โ when you want advice.
Whatever you choose, decide before you draw. Changing what a position means after you have seen the card is not interpretation; it is fitting the answer to the cards.
What about reversals?
If two or three of them land reversed, it usually reads better as the whole current being blocked than as each card flipping to its opposite. A reversal is less โthe oppositeโ and more โturned inward, or not yet resolved.โ
